This popular species of Euphorbia has small, deep purple leaves arranged in whorls on slender stems and forms a tight, rounded mound of foliage. In late spring, clusters of yellow to chartreuse bracts form at the ends of the stems, surrounding the tiny "true" flowers. By summer, the entire mound of foliage turns back to purple. A popular plant to use in borders, the dark foliage complements many other plants in the garden.

Spurge grows well in full sun and will have the strongest coloration when sited there. It also prefers average, well-drained soil. After flowering in spring, plants can be cut back hard. This will keep them more compact and prevent them from splitting in the center. Euphorbia should be divided or propagated from stem cuttings every few years since older plants tend to become leggy.
Use caution and wear gloves when handling this plant; it is POISONOUS if eaten and the sap can be a skin and eye irritant.
