  Arkansas Blue Star (Amsonia hubrichtii)

  Blue Star may largely go unnoticed in your garden throughout the summer after it finishes blooming in spring, although it has a great foliage presence. It'll certainly make you remember it again in fall, when it transitions to an array of colors such as chartreuse, yellow, and golden orange.

  Autumn Stonecrop (Sedum)

  Stonecrop are the mainstay of any fall garden. They don't start blooming until late summer, when the rest of your garden may be winding down. The seedheads that follow are also interesting, but a few varieties, such as 'Neon' also turn a brilliant chartreuse leaf color.

  'Bonfire' is the ultimate foliage plant, looking great from spring to fall. The red tones in its foliage are really highlighted in the cooler temperatures of autumn.

  All Foamy Bells have a certain amount of interest in fall, but it's really that rich mahogany red color of 'Red Rover' that makes this plant a must-have for your fall garden.

  Not only do Geranium have a long season of bloom throughout the summer, but after the cool fall nights, the foliage turns brilliant colors.

  Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium)

  If you're looking for fall color, chances are ornamental grasses are your best bet. And why not go with the classic prairie grass, Little Bluestem? 'Smoke Signal' has blue foliage all summer and starts to really flesh out with brilliant colors during the cooler temperatures of fall.

  Miscanthus is an ornamental grass that is most used for its fall flower plumes and distinct presence in the winter garden, especially with snow cover.
