Common Name: Switch Grass
A new look for Panicum! 'Blue Spear' appears like traditional varieties in the landscape with a sturdy, columnar habit of blue-green leaves. In late summer it differentiates itself with a unique display of fused flower panicles appearing just above the foliage. The panicles maintain their sorghum-like appearance as they mature. Leave standing through winter for an additional season of interest, or use as a cut flower for fall decor.
Switch grass gets its name from the peaceful swishing sound it makes when blowing in the wind. All parts of this grass are very sturdy, and will remain standing thru winter unless snows are heavy. This provides important cover for birds during the coldest days of winter. This grass is very versitile from a design standpoint; it is effective as a specimen, in masses, for screening, alongside ponds or streams, or even in large containers.
